More importantly, the Midland LXT317 radios offer 22 FRS/GMRS (Family Radio Service/General Mobile Radio Service) UHF channels, along with a range of up to 14 miles in open territory. While the GMRS channels require an FCC license to operate, channels 8 to 14 exist on the low-power, license-free FRS spectrum (which also doesn't transmit as far). However, thanks to the wide channel range, you have a host of communications options for everything from ski trips to hunting excursions to neighborhood strolls with the kids. Each radio sports an easy-to-read display that shows you the channel status and other relevant radio information at a glance, along with an intuitive keypad on the front for one-touch access to important functions. And there are several must-have functions, including a channel scan that locates activity, an auto squelch that filters out weak signals, high and low power settings for maximizing transmission distance or saving power, a roger beep that confirms the transmission, a keypad lock, and a silent setting that quiets beeps, tones, and alerts when you can't afford to make extra noise.
